Inchonnachan island, loch lomond (wallaby island)
Inchconnachan Island ( Colquhoun's Island) located in the middle of Loch Lomond is one of many islands and islets located in the Great Trossachs National Nature Reserve. It is well known as the home to a large mob of red-necked Wallabies! The forebears of these Wallabies were brought to the island by Fiona Bryde Coloquhoun, the Countess of Arran. Lady Arran was passionate about animals, nature and Scotland and had Wallabies on her Hemel Hempstead estate near London. She also had a passion for speed boats and held several power boat speed records, later becoming known as the "fastest granny on water". Combining her passions she and her husband brought the island at the end of World War Two. A house, boatshed, pontoon were built and some Wallabies from her English estate were introduced and adapted very quickly to their very different environment and have been known to cross over to over close-by islands when the loch is frozen. They live in perfect harmony with other animals including Capercaillie and recently a nesting pair of Osprey and seem content to live in amongst the dense oak, holly and birch trees.
In 2020, Inchconnach islands was put up for sale and despite the fact that the only way to visit is by canoe and the buildings are now dilapidated, it was sold in 2021 for over 1.5 million pounds. The new owners plan to turn the island into an eco-resort and part of this plan includes the removal of the Wallabies who are said to be destroying the island environment. As you can imagine this decision has raised major public dismay, even though the new owners claim that the Wallabies will be moved elsewhere. However, it seems that the Wallabies will not go quietly as a campaign has been set up to stop this removal. In addition the fact that the island is home to some endangered Capercaillie and now a nesting pair of Osprey have been sighted, will mean that legislation designed to protect endangered animals in Scotland could also be imposed. An online petition to protect the Wallabies and their environment has now over 75,000 and gowing signatures from around Scotland and the World. This petition is still open for comment at www.change.org/p/scottish-government-save-the wallabies-of-loch-lomond
We are indebted to the Scottish Banner Newspaper for alerting us to Inchconnach( Wallaby Island). A reminder that the Scottish Banner Newspaper continues to need our support to continue to be able to publish in these difficult times.

clan septs in australia
Clan Farquharson has a very large number of Sept families (family names associated with the Farquharson Clan). Here in Australia we have some detailed information on the settlement history of those who have a direct connection to the Farquharson name. To date we have limited information on the settlement history of our Sept families. The Clan Association is especially interested in seeking details of Australian Sept family histories. This is expected to be a long term project which will provide information for both today and into the future. While the Association is not able to undertake personal genealogy, it is looking forward to gathering information about Australian Sept families so that a broader picture of our Clan's development here will become more accessible.
A starting point will be the expansion of the Sept families page on this website, to include more about each Sept name and Clan connection. The hope is that Sept families members will contact us with details which can then be added to this website and possibly feature in the Association's newsletter. Please note that to protect the privacy of families and individuals, nothing will be published that has not been approved by the family and that current family members details/ photos will not be included without prior approval.

support the scottish banner newspaper
For 44 years the Scottish Banner Newspaper has been publishing a monthly newspaper full of articles about Scottish events, people and up to date news. In particular, it has supported local Clans and events in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and USA. Corvid 19 cancelled events have prevented it attending Australian Gatherings selling its wide range of goods and advertising revenue has fallen drastically. We must all try and help The Banner survive this difficult time. Check out its website to buy a new subscription for yourself, a family member or a friend, renew membership or check out its online shop. A subscription would be a great present. Help save this important Scottish publication.
